The Scottish Borders Manufacturers' Corporation, was founded in 1776 and is the oldest organisation of its type in the UK.

Formed by ten mill owners, the Corporation - originally named the 'Galashiels Manufacturers' Corporation' - was created to assist the further development of the woollen trade in Galashiels.

An early service was the facility, through combined purchase, to provide machinery that would have been impractical for individual mills to acquire themselves, such as a willy or scribble dicks (as the teasing machine was called).

In 1821, the Corporation invited Sir Walter Scott and Lady Scott to be their guests of honour at the Annual Dinner.

The Corporation's principle aim remains to be the encouragement and promotion of trade and commerce within the Scottish Borders.

This is carried out informally through social networking and fostering links with other trade bodies, and formally through the direct support of grants and mentoring for young businesses.
